Ice dams are a damaging winter roofing problem typically caused by a combination of poor attic or roof ventilation. A clogged or poorly draining gutter system can make things worse. If ignored, Bergen County ice dams can cause serious damage to your roof, gutters, paint, insulation and interior drywall and other surfaces. Preventing ice dams usually requires improving ventilation and insulation and removing heat sources from the attic. Deegan Roofing, Siding & Gutter Company has been proudly serving residents across New Jersey in places like Westfield, Clifton and Toms River since 1989 as roofing and siding contractors. Although we are one of the largest roofing companies in the state, we are a family owned and operated business that places the needs of each customer before all else. If you are looking for help with Bergen County ice dams you’ve come to the right place!

Bergen County Ice Dams | How Do Ice Dams Form?

Ice dams form when snow melts on an upper, warmer part of a roof. Water runs down toward the colder eave, where it freezes into ice. The ice will then accumulate and it can back up under the roof shingles, where it melts again, soaking the roof sheathing and leaking into the attic. There, it soaks the insulation (rendering it much less effective) and can leak through the ceiling drywall below and into your living space. Large ice dams can be very heavy and can damage gutters and even present a safety hazard to people below.

Bergen County Ice Dams | Solutions

The most effective long-term solutions are to keep heat out of the attic and to promote ventilation under the roof deck to keep it as cold as possible. Ventilation will provide for continuous airflow from the soffit (the underside of the roof eave) to the peak, or ridge, of the roof. The baffles hold back the insulation by a couple of inches, creating a channel for air to flow freely past the insulation.
