We might be experiencing an unseasonably warm November here in New Jersey, but before we know it winter will be in full swing. Before the temperatures drop and the snow starts to fall, it’s important to make sure your home’s gutter system is in good working order. When gutters are clogged or disconnected, it can cause moisture to run down the side of your house rather than away from it, potentially causing leaks and mildew growth.

Cleaning

Let’s start by removing any debris that might be clogging your gutter system. If you live in a heavily-wooded area, chances are you have some dense clumps of fallen leaves and twigs sitting in the bottom of your gutters. If you have gutter guards installed, this may not be so much of a problem. Clean your gutters thoroughly so that they’re clear and free of debris, and be sure to pay special attention to the points where your downspouts meet the gutters.

Check for Damage

While you’re clearing the debris out of your gutters, be sure to check for signs of damage as well. If you see any spots where gutter sections have become separated from one another or disconnected from the roof, take steps to repair them as soon as possible. Make sure that the downspouts are firmly secured to the gutters, too.

Inspect Downspouts

Your gutter system won’t do you much good if your downspouts aren’t properly installed. Make sure the downspouts extend far enough away from your home so that water can’t pool on the foundation. If you don’t have room to extend the downspouts, use a splash block to direct water away instead. Use gravity to your advantage as well, and always try to point downspouts downhill and safely away from your home.
