One Christmas eve, my brother thought it would be a good idea to stomp on his roof and climb down a ladder entering the side door and surprising our children with a visit by Santa.  My brother worked in construction so he did not think his muscular 200 pounds would prove to be a problem.  He left his Santa bag just inside the side door.  He donned his Santa outfit and stuffed the pillow in his pants to give him a big tummy.  I was giggling so hard I had to clamp my hand over my mouth.  “SHHH” he said.   Out the door he went to climb the ladder to the roof.

All the adults were in on the joke.  We hushed the children and turned off the Christmas movie.  “What is that?”  We feigned listening at the ceiling.  My six year old son’s eyes were as big as saucers wide eyed with astonishment.   My daughter whispered, “is that Santa?”  My brothers’ five children gasped in anticipation with smiles spreading across their faces.  Grandparents watched with pure joy that the children were so excited.

Then, we heard “stomp, stomp, stomp”.  The children cheered.  The grandparents laughed.  I smiled so hard my face hurt.  My sister in law giggled and looked into the fake fireplace in the corner.  Christmas spirit had never been so high.

“Stomp, Stomp, Stomp, Crash”.  I ran for the side door.  Did Santa fall off the ladder?  Whipping open the door, I lunged into the dark illuminated by Christmas lights.  The ladder was still perched on the side of the house.

I called into the night “Bro where are you?  Are you okay?”

“Help me” my brother called in a half whisper.  “My foot is stuck in the roof”.

I love my brother, but I fell to the ground laughing so hard I could barely breathe.   “I’m sorry, I’m sorry” I gasped trying to suppress the laugher but still emitting strangled giggles.  “Who should I call?  Fire department or Deegan roofing?”

“Try the roofer first, it will be less humiliating.”

I called the roofer and they promised to save Christmas.

How do you know if Santa has been to your house?

Check for damp patches on your floor – this is evidence of North Pole snow clinging to Santa’s boots.  Are the cookies gone?  Santa must have eaten his snack.

Leave carrots out for the reindeer, remember he has 9 of them – also consider leaving grass.  In the morning, go into your garden and check your roof for evidence of leftover grass and carrots.   We leave a basket of carrots and grass and stay off the roof.
