Spring weather can be unpredictable.  When severe weather hits unexpectedly, the risk of injury and weather-related roof damage increases, so planning makes sense.  Prepare for storms, floods, and tornadoes as if you know in advance they are coming, because in the spring, they very likely will descend on your roof.  Spring flings weather at your roof, so protection means maintenance.

Spring flings weather at your roof

Spring is the time of year when many things change including the weather.  Temperatures can swing back and forth between balmy and frigid.  Sunny days may be followed by a week of stormy weather.  Sometimes extreme weather changes can occur even within the same day and in New Jersey, a sudden three-foot snowstorm can occur.  Mark Twain once said, “In the spring I have counted one hundred and thirty-six kinds of weather inside of four and twenty hours.”

Gutters

As a guideline, it’s best to start at the top of the house and work your way down.  Clean the gutters before you wash exterior windows, or your efforts will be spoiled.  Leaving gutters and downspouts packed with leaves and pine straw not only looks messy, but it can also cause leaks, moisture and mildew problems, and rotting wood.  Spring is the perfect time to get gutters sparkling clean.

Check over the roof

While you’re already at the top of your house cleaning the gutters, it’s also a good idea to check over the state of your roof for any easy-to-spot signs of a problem.  Keep an eye out for missing or balding shingles, standing water, and exposed flashing.  Some roof damage may go unseen to the naked eye, so contact your local roofing contractors if you think you may have a leak or other major issue.

Clean the roof

Pressure washers are out for cleaning your roof!  Like the siding of your home, highly pressurized water can exacerbate existing issues.  Instead, get a bucket of warm, soapy water and a roof brush and start scrubbing!  Cleaning your roof can help prevent algae, mold, and mildew growth.

Clean the siding

Siding does more for your home than aesthetics!  The siding on your home also protects it from the elements and water damage.  Be cautious using a pressure washer to clean siding, as the high-powered water can increase any damage your siding may have sustained throughout the winter.  If you see any issues with your siding, make a note to schedule repairs. Damaged siding can lead to mold and algae growth as well as rot if left untreated.

Wash the windows

Windows looking dingy?  Take this time to grab your Windex and a microfiber cloth and clean them off.  To avoid streaky residue, use a squeegee to better remove all water spots and keep your view clear.
